“This department has been through so much devastation in the past seven months, it truly doesn’t feel real….Had we not participated in the RSS Embedded Program, I truly don’t know where our staff would be after the devastation of Hurricane Helene.”

— Scott Jones, Fairview Fire Department Chief, post-Hurricane Helene

A Personal Thank You Letter from Fairview FD Chief, Scott Jones

“It took us 45 days to reach a point where we could schedule the debriefings for our entire department. I would like to say that WNC Peer Support, Responder Support Services, Rick Baker, Ned Fowler and many clinicians who assist these organizations were tremendous throughout this incident and we could not have made it through it without them.

“I was so busy myself I didn’t even think of contacting RSS. The days after the hurricane hit our community, I looked up and there stood one of the RSS clinicians helping our staff. Every day for many days, those clinicians were in our station helping our staff get through this tragedy.

“I truly feel that Fairview FD would have lost much of our staff immediately after the incident had it not been for the relationship that had already been established for the past two years and for the quick response of RSS and WNC Peer Support getting into our station after the hurricane.

Every day we come in and do our best to honor our fallen brothers by persevering and pushing forward. I would also recommend that if you are not using one of the many programs that RSS offers for mental health, please reach out to Rick Baker and see what they have to offer. They truly helped our department. If it had not been for them, I don’t know where we would be.”
